Is That Pain Normal? When to Get an Ultrasound for Abdominal Issues

November 12, 2025

Abdominal pain is common, but how do you know when it’s serious enough to need an ultrasound abdominal pain scan? If your discomfort is persistent, severe, or accompanied by other unusual symptoms, it may be time to get it checked. An abdominal ultrasound is a fast, safe and non-invasive way to identify the cause of ongoing pain and get answers about what’s happening inside your body.

What Is an Abdominal Ultrasound, and When Do You Need One?

An abdominal ultrasound uses sound waves to create live images of your internal organs, including your liver, pancreas, gallbladder, spleen, and kidneys. It’s typically recommended when you experience abdominal pain that doesn’t go away, gets worse over time, or is associated with other symptoms like nausea, bloating, or changes in bowel movements.

You should consider an ultrasound abdominal pain scan if:

  • Your pain is localised (e.g. upper right side, lower left, etc.)
  • It lasts longer than a few days
  • You experience unexplained bloating or weight loss
  • You have nausea, vomiting, or fever with your pain
  • You have a personal or family history of liver, gallbladder, or kidney issues

What Can an Abdominal Ultrasound Detect?

An ultrasound abdominal pain scan can identify a wide range of internal conditions, such as:

  • Gallstones or gallbladder inflammation
  • Fatty liver disease or liver lesions
  • Pancreatitis or pancreatic cysts
  • Kidney stones or blockages
  • Enlarged spleen
  • Abnormal fluid or masses in the abdomen

One of the most common findings during an ultrasound is gallstones. These are small, hardened deposits in the gallbladder that can block the bile ducts and cause sharp upper abdominal pain, particularly after eating. If you’re interested in understanding the symptoms and treatment options for gallstones, Healthdirect offers an excellent overview on Gallstones.

Recognising the Signs: Is It Time to Book?

If your pain has lasted more than a couple of days, or keeps coming back, don’t ignore it. In particular, right-sided abdominal pain under the ribs, pain after meals, or pain that radiates to the back can be signs of a more serious issue, such as gallbladder or liver problems. These are exactly the types of issues that can be quickly identified through an ultrasound abdominal pain scan.

You don’t need to let the pain linger and hope it goes away, early diagnosis can lead to faster treatment and peace of mind.

What to Expect During the Scan

An abdominal ultrasound is:

  • Non-invasive and painless
  • Usually completed in 10 – 20 minutes
  • Performed with a small handheld device moved across your stomach
  • Sometimes requires fasting (especially if liver, gallbladder or pancreas are being examined)

At Capri Ultrasound, our team will provide clear instructions if fasting is necessary ahead of your scan. You’ll be in a comfortable, private clinical environment and looked after by friendly, qualified sonographers who specialise in abdominal imaging.

Attendance and Late Cancellation Policy

As a bulk-billing practice, we are deeply committed to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to our community. To sustain this service, we rely on our appointments being filled. When an appointment is missed or cancelled at the last minute, it results in lost resources that make it increasingly difficult for us to maintain our bulk-billing model for everyone.
To help us continue serving the community efficiently, please note our policy regarding attendance:
  • Timely Cancellations: If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, we kindly ask that you provide us with as much notice as possible so that we may offer the time slot to another patient in need.
  • Booking Limitations: Patients who miss their appointments without notice (no-shows) or cancel on short notice may have their future booking privileges suspended at our practice.
  • Our Discretionary Approach: We understand that genuine emergencies and unforeseen circumstances occur. Decisions regarding future bookings are made at management’s discretion, thoughtfully taking into account the specific situation and your past attendance history.
Thank you for your cooperation and for partnering with us to keep essential medical imaging bulk-billed and accessible to all.

2. Patient Behaviour Policy
We understand that undergoing medical imaging can be an anxious and stressful experience, and our team is fully dedicated to supporting you with care and empathy. However, creating a safe, calm, and respectful environment for our staff and other patients is our utmost priority.
To ensure our practice remains a safe space for everyone, we observe a strict Zero Tolerance Policy:
  • Professional Boundaries: We expect all interactions with our team whether in person, over the phone, or via digital communication—to be respectful. Rude, aggressive, abusive, demanding, or entitled behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Service Discontinuation: Our staff have the right to work in a safe environment free from hostility. Patients who exhibit unacceptable behaviour will be asked to leave immediately and will no longer be permitted to book future appointments with our clinic.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our clinic a safe, polite, and welcoming environment for everyone.
