Who Can Refer You for a Bulk Billed Ultrasound?

February 16, 2026

Can you get a bulk billed ultrasound with a referral from a physio, podiatrist, osteopath or chiropractor?

In short: Medicare only allows bulk billed ultrasound services if the referral comes from an eligible provider, usually a GP. While podiatrists may only refer for ultrasounds of the ankle, foot or skin lumps. Physiotherapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors cannot refer for Medicare-funded ultrasounds, meaning the scan must be paid privately. Knowing this upfront helps avoid confusion, cancellations, and unexpected out-of-pocket costs.

Understanding Bulk Billed Ultrasounds in Australia

A bulk billed ultrasound means the cost of your scan is fully covered by Medicare, so there’s no out-of-pocket fee, but only if you have a referral from an eligible provider. A doctor can refer for any ultrasound and a podiatrist for ankles, feet and skin lumps.

At Capri Ultrasound on the Gold Coast, we bulk bill Medicare card holders for ultrasounds when referred by a doctor and for those ultrasounds podiatrists can refer. Unfortunately, many patients are unaware that not all healthcare providers can issue valid referrals for bulk billed ultrasound services.

Can Physiotherapists Refer for Bulk Billed Ultrasounds?

This is one of the most common sources of confusion we see. While physiotherapists can recommend imaging as part of their care, Medicare does not accept physiotherapy referrals for ultrasounds. If you’ve been referred by a physio, your scan will not be bulk billed, and you’ll need to pay privately, in this case we’d recommend speaking with your GP, specialist or online doctor about getting a Medicare-eligible referral.

This applies to:

  • Musculoskeletal ultrasound scans
  • General ultrasound such as abdominal and urinary tract scans
  • Small parts ultrasounds such as thyroid
  • Vascular imaging

Regardless of the scan type, physiotherapists cannot refer for a bulk billed ultrasound under current Medicare guidelines.

What About Chiropractors and Osteopaths?

Similarly, chiropractors and osteopaths cannot refer for bulk billed ultrasound scans. While they are qualified allied health professionals, they fall outside the scope of Medicare’s ultrasound imaging referral eligibility.

This can lead to frustration for patients especially when they arrive expecting a bulk billed service based on a non-Medicare referral. At Capri Ultrasound, we do our best to clarify this ahead of time to avoid cancellations and ensure a smooth patient experience.

Can a Podiatrist Refer for Bulk Billed Ultrasounds?

In some cases, yes, but it depends on the situation. Podiatrists are one of the few allied health providers who can refer for certain Medicare-funded ultrasound scans, but only for:

  • Ankle
  • Foot
  • Skin and subcutaneous lumps

Medicare Requirements for Ultrasound Referrals

Here’s a simple breakdown of who can and can’t refer you for a bulk billed ultrasound under Medicare:

Healthcare Provider Can Refer for Bulk Billed Ultrasound?
General Practitioner (GP) ✅ Yes
Specialist Doctor (e.g. Cardiologist) ✅ Yes
Podiatrist  ✅ For ankle, foot and skin lumps only
Physiotherapist ❌ No
Chiropractor ❌ No
Osteopath ❌ No

Why This Matters Before You Book

Patients often search terms like:

  • bulk billing ultrasound near me
  • ultrasound bulk bill near me
  • are ultrasounds bulk billed

But the real issue isn’t just location, it’s referral eligibility. To avoid unexpected costs:

  • Ask if your referrer is Medicare-eligible
  • If referred by an allied health provider, confirm whether the scan is private or bulk billed
  • Don’t assume a referral = free scan

Being informed saves time, money, and stress.

Attendance and Late Cancellation Policy

As a bulk-billing practice, we are deeply committed to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to our community. To sustain this service, we rely on our appointments being filled. When an appointment is missed or cancelled at the last minute, it results in lost resources that make it increasingly difficult for us to maintain our bulk-billing model for everyone.
To help us continue serving the community efficiently, please note our policy regarding attendance:
  • Timely Cancellations: If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, we kindly ask that you provide us with as much notice as possible so that we may offer the time slot to another patient in need.
  • Booking Limitations: Patients who miss their appointments without notice (no-shows) or cancel on short notice may have their future booking privileges suspended at our practice.
  • Our Discretionary Approach: We understand that genuine emergencies and unforeseen circumstances occur. Decisions regarding future bookings are made at management’s discretion, thoughtfully taking into account the specific situation and your past attendance history.
Thank you for your cooperation and for partnering with us to keep essential medical imaging bulk-billed and accessible to all.

2. Patient Behaviour Policy
We understand that undergoing medical imaging can be an anxious and stressful experience, and our team is fully dedicated to supporting you with care and empathy. However, creating a safe, calm, and respectful environment for our staff and other patients is our utmost priority.
To ensure our practice remains a safe space for everyone, we observe a strict Zero Tolerance Policy:
  • Professional Boundaries: We expect all interactions with our team whether in person, over the phone, or via digital communication—to be respectful. Rude, aggressive, abusive, demanding, or entitled behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Service Discontinuation: Our staff have the right to work in a safe environment free from hostility. Patients who exhibit unacceptable behaviour will be asked to leave immediately and will no longer be permitted to book future appointments with our clinic.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our clinic a safe, polite, and welcoming environment for everyone.
