Abdominal Ultrasound: What It Can Detect and Why You Might Need One

August 27, 2025

Experiencing persistent stomach pain, bloating, or unexplained discomfort? Your body might be trying to tell you something. An abdominal ultrasound is a safe, non-invasive imaging technique that provides valuable insights into the health of your internal organs. Using high-frequency sound waves, it captures real-time images of the liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, spleen and aorta, helping to detect conditions like gallstones, liver disease, kidney issues and abdominal aortic aneurysms before they become serious. Unlike X-rays or CT scans, ultrasound doesn’t use radiation, making it a preferred option for many patients.

If you’re experiencing persistent abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, or other concerning symptoms, Capri Ultrasound offers bulk-billed abdominal ultrasounds to detect potential issues early, helping you get the care you need as soon as possible. With advanced technology, Capri Ultrasound offers high-quality scans ensuring Medicare-eligible patients can access diagnostic imaging without financial burden.

What exactly is an Abdominal Ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound is a quick and painless scan performed by a trained Sonographer. Using a handheld device called a transducer, sound waves are sent through the abdomen to create real-time images of internal organs. This allows doctors to assess organs function and detect abnormalities without the need for radiation, making it safe and effective. At Capri Ultrasound, we ensure accurate imaging in a comfortable setting, providing clear results for your healthcare provider.

What Can an Abdominal Ultrasound Detect?

  • Liver Conditions (fatty liver, cirrhosis, liver cysts, tumours)
  • Gallbladder Issues (gallstones, inflammation, polyps)
  • Kidney Problems (kidney stones, cysts, tumours, infections)
  • Pancreas Abnormalities (pancreatitis, tumours)
  • Spleen Disorders (enlargement, cysts)
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (detecting enlargement or bulging of the aorta)
  • Fluid buildup (ascites in the abdomen, often linked to liver disease or infections)
  • Enlarged lymph nodes (which may indicate infections or cancers)
  • Bowel abnormalities (such as thickening of the intestinal walls, sometimes seen in inflammatory bowel diseases)
  • Appendicitis (by assessing inflammation in the appendix)

When Should You Get an Abdominal Ultrasound?

You may need an abdominal ultrasound if you’re experiencing symptoms such as:

  • Persistent abdominal pain that doesn’t go away or worsens over time.
  • Unexplained weight loss, which could indicate underlying organ issues.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and eyes), a potential sign of liver or gallbladder disease.
  • Bloating or swelling in the abdomen, which may be linked to fluid buildup or organ dysfunction.

Who Is at Risk?

Certain individuals may benefit from regular abdominal ultrasounds, including those with:

  • A history of gallstones, liver disease, or kidney problems.
  • Digestive issues such as pancreatitis or inflammatory bowel conditions.
  • A family history of abdominal aortic aneurysms, which can be life-threatening if undetected.

Attendance and Late Cancellation Policy

As a bulk-billing practice, we are deeply committed to providing accessible, high-quality healthcare to our community. To sustain this service, we rely on our appointments being filled. When an appointment is missed or cancelled at the last minute, it results in lost resources that make it increasingly difficult for us to maintain our bulk-billing model for everyone.
To help us continue serving the community efficiently, please note our policy regarding attendance:
  • Timely Cancellations: If you are unable to attend your scheduled appointment, we kindly ask that you provide us with as much notice as possible so that we may offer the time slot to another patient in need.
  • Booking Limitations: Patients who miss their appointments without notice (no-shows) or cancel on short notice may have their future booking privileges suspended at our practice.
  • Our Discretionary Approach: We understand that genuine emergencies and unforeseen circumstances occur. Decisions regarding future bookings are made at management’s discretion, thoughtfully taking into account the specific situation and your past attendance history.
Thank you for your cooperation and for partnering with us to keep essential medical imaging bulk-billed and accessible to all.

2. Patient Behaviour Policy
We understand that undergoing medical imaging can be an anxious and stressful experience, and our team is fully dedicated to supporting you with care and empathy. However, creating a safe, calm, and respectful environment for our staff and other patients is our utmost priority.
To ensure our practice remains a safe space for everyone, we observe a strict Zero Tolerance Policy:
  • Professional Boundaries: We expect all interactions with our team whether in person, over the phone, or via digital communication—to be respectful. Rude, aggressive, abusive, demanding, or entitled behaviour will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
  • Service Discontinuation: Our staff have the right to work in a safe environment free from hostility. Patients who exhibit unacceptable behaviour will be asked to leave immediately and will no longer be permitted to book future appointments with our clinic.
We appreciate your understanding and cooperation in keeping our clinic a safe, polite, and welcoming environment for everyone.
